The scientifically proven, transformative power of gratitude and the simple practices that can bring profound positive change are overwhelmingly clear now. The practice of gratitude has emerged as a sign of hope and healing, along the path to resonating with greater joy and emotional well-being.

How do we know this? Neuroscience, research studies, year of personal practice myself and oh yea, Robert A. Emmons speaks all about the power of gratitude in his two best-selling books : ‘Thanks!’ and ‘Gratitude Works!’.

So let’s unlock the it’s healing potential and embrace the abundance of joy that surrounds us in every moment.

First, understanding the science of gratitude

Grounded in rigorous scientific research, the practice of gratitude has been shown to have profound effects on our physical, emotional, and psychological well-being. Robert A. Emmons, a leading expert in the field, has conducted extensive studies demonstrating the far-reaching benefits of gratitude. Research findings indicate that individuals who regularly practice gratitude experience increased levels of happiness, improved relationships, and enhanced resilience in the face of adversity. That enough for you or do you need more? Gratitude has also been associated with numerous physical health benefits, including better sleep, reduced inflammation, and strengthened immune function. Interesting! Neuroscientific studies have also revealed that practicing gratitude activates areas of the brain associated with pleasure, reward, and emotional regulation, leading to lasting changes in brain structure and function. Now, I don’t know about you, but that’s enough for me. Yet I always recommended to DYOR (do your own research!). So then let’s get on with learning the how-to.

Practices for cultivating gratitude

  1. Write in a gratitude journal: You can start / end your day by writing down three things you are grateful for. Be sure to feel those moments come to life within your mind. Reflect on the blessings and abundance in your life, no matter how big or small. It all counts big. By committing to a daily gratitude practice, you train your mind to focus on the positive aspects of life and shift your perspective towards gratitude and abundance. Thus, rewriting any negative subconscious programs & concepts that could be sabotaging your experience, that no longer serve you. Simply give it a try and see how many things you can come up with.
  2. Practice mindful gratitude: By being mindfully present & aware of the ongoing sensations, thoughts & emotions that arise in the moment, we can express gratitude to really ground this simple practice in. Savour the experience with gratitude in the moment and allow yourself to fully immerse yourself in the feelings of appreciation & joy for all of it. When you can do this with negative experiences, you’re whats called a Master. Think about that… Being grateful for ALL OF IT. Master level awaits!
  3. Expressing gratitude to everyone: Expressing to the special people in your life, that great impact that’ve had on you is an amazing practice to do. The health benefits are astounding for relationship building. Whether it's a heartfelt thank-you note, a kind gesture, or simply saying (with heart) ”I appreciate you”, strengthens your relationships and creates more connection between you. #JDI
  4. Expressing gratitude for challenges: Embracing the practice of finding gratitude in difficult times is, like I said, a master level practice. Instead of dwelling on & spinning in all the negative energy, simply by reframing challenges into opportunities to learn important lessons, you can show everyone, including yourself, that no matter what, being grateful is part of my identity and who I Am. It can lead to you gaining strength & wisdom from overcoming obstacles.
  5. Random acts of kindness: This is one I have a ton fo fun with. Smiling at everyone I see. It maybe the only one they receive that day and could change everything for them. So use this powerful expression freely. Lend a hand to a stranger hainvg a difficult moment, give someone a heart-felt compliment, even volunteering your time, can spread kindness, love & create more joy, which in turn THEY can be grateful for and the ripple effect continues. Powerful stuff.
